Jacks FAQ's

Dogs like Jack love artificial grassQ: Why should you select artificial turf for your residential lawn?
A: Artificial turf saves you money and time as a homeowner. Many local high schools  and colleges are installing artificial turf because they are saving money from:

  • Water savings,
  • Less labor,
  • Equipment expenses,
  • Fuel, and
  • Other replacement and maintenance expenses over time.

Artificial grass, installed properly by a competent contractor, can give you a beautiful lawn 365 days a year without all the hassles that come with a natural grass lawn in Southern California. No watering, no mowing, no fading, no edging, no fertilizing, no chemicals, no pet damage, no pests, no allergies and no muddy paw prints. You never have to worry about lawn trimmings, or grass allergies. And it will never turn brown in the heat of the summer. It reduces air pollution because it eliminates the need for gas-powered lawn mowers and trimmers. Many people don’t realize how much time and money they spend on their yard only to have it look terrible most of the time. Synthetic turf is the solution to a great look, reducing costs and saving time on maintenance.

Q: How does artificial turf affect my property value?
A: When you have artificial grass installed by a professional with the highest quality product, home values increase. Synthetic turf has proven to increase property values as well as curb appeal. It is the most beautiful and realistic looking synthetic grass on the market. In fact, artificial grass is being used by builders and developers in model homes across the country to beautify the models and at the same time cut costs while the properties are being shown to prospective buyers.

Q: How much does Jack’s Turf cost?
A: It is actually much less expensive than you think when you consider all the costs associated with a well-kept natural grass lawn. Synthetic turf will pay for itself over a period of a few years! Let’s say you spend $200 per month on landscaping and water costs, which comes out to $2,400 a year. Over five years, that cost comes out to $12,000. Jack’s Turf installs for $8 - $12 a square foot on average, which means you can easily install an average sized yard for $5,000 to $10,000. Jack’s Turf provides free estimates at your home.

Q: What kind of maintenance does it require?
A: Maintenance is simplified to just keeping it clean. You can remove organic materials like leaves from the surface, typically by using a leaf blower or a lawn sweeper. Rakes may be required for removing heavier objects. But the leaf blower is the ideal tool for general upkeep. A stiff, natural bristle broom can be used to “fluff” high traffic areas.

synthetic turf, great for dogsQ: How does artificial turf do with dogs?
A: I’ve personally tested all the Jack’s Turf product line and love them all. Now you can have a dog AND a beautiful lawn all of the time!! Over 80% of artificial turf customers are dog owners. Liquids drain right through, droppings can be picked up as they would be with regular grass or washed off with a hose, and dogs will not dig through the backing. Muddy paw tracks on your carpet will be a thing of the past!

Q: What about my kids playing on FieldTurf?
A: Kids love it! Jack’s Turf is softer and safer than real grass and kids have loads of fun playing on it. Parents love the fact of no more stained pants and scraped knees!

Q: Will weeds go through it?
A: Weeds cannot grow through the tough synthetic turf backing. On rare occasions, you may see some popping up along a border. Simply shoot some weed killer on them and they are history!

Q: How much water can you save in a year with artificial grass?
A: A lawn of 1800 square feet requires 56,000 gallons of water per year to maintain, which is equivalent to all the yearly water needs of three adults.

artificial grassQ: Are there rebates available for artificial grass installation?
A: Many cities and water districts are now offering rebates for synthetic turf installations, including the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, and the Municipal Water District of Orange County. Check with your local city or water district.

Q: Does artificial grass fade?
A: It has built-in UV protection that allows it to hold its color even under the most dramatic conditions. The Jack’s Turf warranty covers degradation from ultra violet radiation from the sun for 8 years for landscape turf and 7 years for a putting green surface.

Q: What about Gophers? Rabbits? Bugs?
A: Jack’s Turf eliminates any troubles you have with rabbits and gophers. Rabbits will no longer ruin your lawn by eating your grass and gophers cannot burrow up through the turf. You will no longer need pesticides. Bugs and insects are history, because there is nothing of organic nourishment for them with an artificial lawn.

Q: How long does it take to install?
A: An average landscaping area might take 2 to 3 days. Each installation is customized so it is hard to say exactly without a site visit. We average approximately 200 square feet (10 x 20 feet) of all-inclusive installation work – ground prep and installation of finished product in a one day time period.

synthetic grassQ: How long does synthetic turf last before it has to be replaced?
A: This depends upon the application of course and how much use the synthetic turf has to withstand. Our turf products carry a 8 year guarantee but with proper care and maintenance artificial turf surfaces have been known to last for up to 20 years.

Q: Is there a special yarn used in the manufacture of synthetic turf?

A: Yes, there are 2 yarns used: PP (polypropylene) which is hardwearing and suited to general use and PE (polyethylene) which has strong, waxy softer fibers and provides a 'Low Sliding Resistance' ideal for surface contact sports such as football. Nylon is also used.

Q: There are so many different types of synthetic turf - how do I know the right one to choose?
A: The needs of any one project can vary greatly so it's a matter of highlighting the key points regarding the application of the turf.
        For example:

  • the specific use - sports, garden, landscaping, display, etc
  • the degree of 'wear and tear' expected to take place
  • if it's for a sports surface, how skilled are the players
  • who will be using it?

Q: What about surface water collecting on synthetic turf?
A: Our turf products are water permeable so surface water drains through.

synthetic turfQ: What's "infill" and "sand infill"?
A: Infill is where the artificial turf is inserted with sand or a mixture of small rubber particles and sand to help stabilize it for better performance. One infill product is called Durafill which is a 100% nonabsorbent material that does not absorb animal urine.

Q: Will the sand and rubber infill harm my pets or children?
A: Our infill is non-toxic and in no way will harm either children or pets if swallowed.

Q:  Why is it important to work with a company that has a current California Contractor’s license?
A: When you contract to have work done in your home, remember that to do any project that totals over $500, a company must have a valid Contractor’s License. The contractor is required by law to show this number on any materials they use to market their work, on contracts, etc. By using a licensed contractor, you are assured that the contractor has adequate knowledge and experience to do your job right, and they are covered by the necessary bonding, insurance and workers compensation insurance to protect you, the homeowner.

Q: Will you see any seams in the artificial turf?
A: Matching and securing seams is a critical step. We begin by identifying the best placement for the seam, then cutting the edges to match. To complete a seam, a third piece of material is laid under the artificial turf, and the two turf pieces are glued to this third strip. We use glue specially selected for use outdoors with Jack's Turf. Once glued in place, we also staple all our seams to secure the material and to minimize any stress on the seam. The seams are done with care, so you won’t be able to detect them. And once the infill material is added over the artificial turf, the seams become invisible.

Q: Will my Home Owner’s Association (HOA) allow it?
A: We have worked with numerous HOAs and most of the time it is not a problem. We will support you in presenting to the HOA.
